A Life Lesson

8/22/2014

It's Dave Matthews Band weekend for me. 3 shows in 3 days at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley.

By the end of this weekend, I will have seen 30 DMB shows in my lifetime. (Crazy for most people. A milestone for a Davehead.)

So yesterday, I decided to get my hair professionally washed and flat ironed for the shows.

My normal stylist was out sick, so her replacement did my hair.

She was a sweet lady, but slow. I mean really slow. It took 4 hours for a 1-hour job.

I was doing my best to be positive. I dug deep to find some inner calm as she ran the flat iron over what felt like each individual strand of my hair (my locks are deceptively long and thick).

And she talked. And talked. And talked.

I mean if we were jamming on intuition or self-help or consciousness or manifestation or healing old wounds or self-love, I would have been in it to win it and gladly sat there all night.

My jaw clenched. My foot began to tap. Sitting still is not my thing. That's why I gave up the braids.

So I tried to read a book to derail my impatience: Creating Money, Sanaya Roman. Old school, self-help book. Nearly a classic.

I could barely get through a paragraph. More talking. And talking. And talking.

Even though I'm in the business of listening, when it comes to my personal life, I like to zone out and turn off. I'm more introverted than not. Getting my hair done is a time to think. I choose my service providers based on how much freedom I have to just be...me.

The one section of the book I was able to read was this question:

What am I learning by being in this situation?

Ah hell, the Universe was trying to teach me something.

So I closed the book and listened.

She's a single mother. Worked in finance, but was laid off during the recession. This is a second career for her. She loves it, but she feels her passion is being exploited by her employer because she's having to take on the work of 3 people. She has diabetes and had not had time for a lunch break. Her kid is getting ready to graduate from high school. She's nervous he'll get hurt playing football even though that is the only way he'll be able to get into college on a full scholarship. Her boss just gave her another appointment and she's concerned she won't get home in time to make dinner...again. And all she wanted was for my hair to look great for my concerts. In spite of her internal struggles, all she wanted was for me to be pleased and feel good about myself.

My intuition is usually turned way up. I listen to advise people. Daily, I get paid to hear people dump their feelings and then I dig through it to help them find their truth. I love my work.

Of course, I could have given her a 100 bucks worth of great advice about taking care of herself and trusting the Universe. Manifesting and being faithful. Creating structure in her life so she can achieve her goals and of course, manage her time better.  This is my job.

However, this wasn't the time to work.

It was a time to listen and dial down my intuitive coaching radar.

And then something incredible happened.

My jaw relaxed. My foot stopped tapping. The Divine calm emerged from within.

All this time, I thought the only way to turn off doing my job was to zone out so I wasn't taking on other people's energy.

I realized in that moment that I could be fully and completely present without "reading" the situation. I could let her "dump" without being a receptacle for her stuff. I could listen without feeling the need to fix the problem.

She didn't want to be fixed. She just wanted the space to be heard. She didn't even want praise for totally rocking out my hair. This sweet lady just wanted the space to do what she loved.

Was I totally ready to run out the door when she was done? Absolutely.

Did I feel drained? Not so much.

So the lesson from the Universe for all of us:

When you give others the space to have what they want, you'll get what you want.

Inevitably, there will be times when a situation does not work within your established boundaries. You'll feel like you're not getting what you want.

Instead of fighting it, go within and ask your Higher Self/Intuition/Connection to Source:

What am I learning by being in this situation?

Then allow the answer to come forward.

You'll be amazed by how everything will seem to work out in your favor.

Effortlessly.

With joy,

Amy
