"I want to do what you do."
If I received a $1000 for every time someone said this statement this year: "I want to do what you do", I would be on target to make a quarter of a million dollars this year (seriously).
I so get it. I would have said the same thing to me 5 years ago. In celebration of 5 years in business, I want to support others who dream of being their own boss by sharing my business story with you.
Here is how to do what I do:
Read, listen, study and do your self-work. My entire life; relationship, spiritual practice, finances, business, goals and health is an exercise in personal development so that I can be the best intuitive and coach I can be. I'm up at dawn in mediation and I fall asleep with my Kindle in hand.
Work on your money mindset. Your perception of money may be working okay for you when you're employed by someone else, but the minute you become your paycheck, things can get wonky. I made a profit my first full time month in business. I doubled my earnings every month until I hit a plateau about 9 months in. For over a year thereafter, I hovered at the same monthly income. I kept telling myself it would get better, but it didn't.
Then by some act of Divine faith, while listening to a telesummit, I heard a woman lecture on money mindset. What the what? I set up a session with her immediately. The cost to work with her was $1200 a month for two sessions. I signed up for a 6-month package.
Committing to that amount of money brought my limiting money beliefs front and center. I secretly criticized her for "charging too much". Of course my ego, ignored the fact that in the first 3 months of my coaching package, I not only surpassed my plateau, but I triple my income. Naturally, I self-sabotaged the relationship by skipping appointments and missing payments. To solidify the lesson, every six months since then, I attract a client who skips appointments and misses payments. Oh the law of attraction in action.
Start working on your money mindset today. Money blocks are so deeply ingrained in all of us. Even my most prosperous clients eventually hits a money block. Of course, these come up at the most inconvenient time. Like when you're building a business, dating your soul mate, buying a house, planning a wedding, splitting the dinner check with friends, standing in line at Whole Foods, having a child or finally pursuing a dream/goal/desire. Do whatever it takes to release your limitations, especially if you want to be in business for yourself.
Learn how to sell. I am so thankful that I spent almost 7 years working in a sales position prior to starting my business. Those transferable skills were the key to my ability to make money right out of the gate. If you want to be in business, even a spiritually-based or holistic business, discover your personal sales technique now. Your ability to sell will expand and grow the longer you stay in business, but it takes time to feel comfortable doing it. Sales are key.
I want to be crystal clear: If you want to be your own boss, then you have to get the sale. Without sales, you don't make money. Marketing is letting people know you exist. Sales is making the offer. You cannot generate a livable income until you are making offers that get accepted on a consistent basis.
I am so thankful to the Universe for consistently bringing coaching programs into my life to teach me how to attract new clients. To date, I have done two programs to work through this issue. Of course, my ego always finds a way to poo-poo some of the guidance I am given in these programs. I now can recognize my self-sabotaging behaviors, so I make it a goal to at least try every practice my coaches recommend.
Figure out how to stay consistent. If you have any trouble staying consistent in another area your life, it is an indicator that you have some mindset issues that will keep you from staying totally consistent in your business.
Up until the last 6 months, I had a habit of overworking until I crashed. This cycle continued until I learned the power of compound consistency.
Darren Hardy, editor of Success Magazine, describes it as the compound effect: "The Compound Effect is the principle of reaping huge rewards from a series of small, smart choices. What's most interesting about this process to me is that, even though the results are massive, the steps, in the moment, don't feel significant."
Learning to be consistent meant that I had to accept that I wasn't working in a way that produced my desired outcome. I had to do something differently. I had to do the opposite of what I had been doing.
Being consistent also forced me to deal with the fact that I was out of sync with time. I regularly underestimated how long it took to do a particular task in my business. Only after working with a brilliant coach, did I recognize that time management was my problem. I now grossly overestimate how long it will take me to do my work, which actually ensures that I am working at a reasonable and healthy pace.
My secret to managing my time better is intuitively checking in with myself before I make my to-do list at the start of the week. I have to actually pay attention to how I feel. As a result, I have limited the amount of hours I work. I now take on less clients, but at a much higher price point (I now only offer sessions 2 days a week instead of 6 days a week and a single session costs $225 instead of $85).
Because of my experiences over the last 5 years, I am an even better coach and intuitive. I recently wrapped up a package with a client and thought: Wow, I would hire me.
You can definitely do what I do. Do your self-work, always. Work on your money mindset, daily. Learn to sell. Be consistent by managing your time well. Maximize your strengths and transferable skills. Minimize your weaknesses by hiring a coach, enrolling in programs and doing your homework. Through it all, trust your intuition and release self-sabotaging behaviors.
Here's to you starting your business in 2016.
I am always here to cheer you on and help you overcome your blocks. Review and consider my coaching packages here. I've even added a premium package for the person totally ready to take their life to the next level.
With so much love,
Amy
